Starting a Study Group

First Steps

  • Gather contact information
  • Decide on study group size (recommended ~10-15 people)
  • Choose a group host/lead, this can change each week if necessary
  • Coordinate a meeting time that works with everyone's schedules (or as many as possible)
  • Connect group through a chat platform
  • Send out syllabus to all participants
  • Request commitment for full length of study group course

Group Chat

  • Choose preferred communication platform (encrypted and secure platforms especially depending on your local laws)
  • Communication and discussion throughout course
  • Students can communicate abscences, late prep work, etc.

Introductory Meeting for Beginner Groups

  • Crit / Self Crit
  • Review Study Group guidelines
  • Review personal guidelines and boundaries
  • Encourage active participation

Syllabus Formats

Weekly 60 minutes, no prep work

  • 10 minutes: introductions and settling in
  • 40 minutes: weekly theme materials and discussion questions
  • 10 minutes: closing review and crit/self-crit

Weekly 90 minutes, with prep work

Prep Work should be due 24-48 hours prior to meeting, group host should review and provide notes on prep work submissions

  • 10 minutes: introductions and settling in
  • 30 minutes: prep work review and discuss
  • 40 minutes: weekly theme materials and discussion questions
  • 10 minutes: closing review and crit/self-crit
